Heels 2-0 on the Grand Strand

Our time at Myrtle Beach was great and the team won both games.  Even though the first half of each game saw the opposition hanging in, the Tar Heels dominated the 2nd half of both games, and have more than earned some time off given what's been required of them especially since Thanksgiving.

It seemed like Sunday came way too fast.  After a completely lazy day on Saturday, I had to get up and get us ready to check out of our room by 11:00.  Insert sad face.  Breakfast (at the hotel's restaurant) and checkout went smoothly.

We decided to spend the time between check out and game time (3:00) enjoying an activity at Broadway at the Beach.  We thought about Wonderworks; but found it probably wouldn't be a good value for my son.  So we drove around the area to the Ripley's Aquarium.

My children love stuff like this and it's educational too.  My daughter especially loves hands on one on one learning.  She'll talk to staff at museums and aquariums and such for as long as they answer back.  My son loves to learn as well; so I usually aim for him to learn 2 new things on these visits.  On this one he learned about the Hammer Head shark and the Saw fish.  His favorite thing to learn about on this trip though was the horseshoe crab.

After the aquarium we went for a late lunch and made our way back to the Convention Center about 30 minutes before game time.

We were in our seats in time to watch both teams warm up.  I could tell the Elon Phoenix were pumped for this one.  They were motivated to try to get this upset win for their coach, UNC All-American Charlotte Smith.  We waited for game time and I took a few shots.  This free throw practice paid off.  They shot very well from the charity stripe during the game.

It wasn't long before the National Anthem was performed (by a very talented young lady) and it was time for starting lineups.  I was excited to see how we would perform really hoping for a fast start and I was looking forward to seeing Charlotte Smith's Elon team.

We had another great start in this one.  But Elon soon got going as well.  The first half was like a shootout with 11 three-pointers made between both teams (6 for UNC, 5 for Elon).  North Carolina did build a double digit lead; but Elon was able to work the ball to the corners to shooters to close to within 3 points by halftime.  The score was 46 to 43 North Carolina.  I sat there thinking they play like their Coach knows UNC inside and out.  And of course she does.

So as the 2nd half started, my daughter looked at me with the most serious face and said, "It's the 2nd half.  It is time to take them down."  Okay then dear.  I'm sure they will come out and play well.  They did.  They started out with a 10-0 run.  I remember texting a friend a little later telling her we'd outscored them 26-10 so far that half.  Even though our friends in the black and white shirts were a bit more involved than I ever like, it was a good win.  UNC cooled off a little in the 2nd half as the starters didn't play as much.  They as a group were 23 of 43 from the field.  Xylina (McDaniel) in particular played some inspired basketball on both ends of the floor.  I can just hope that the injury she suffered isn't too serious.

Xylina McDaniel: 14 points, 5 rebounds, 1 assist, 2 blocks, 3 steals (photo from www.goheels.com)

In just 20 minutes of action, Xylina put up these numbers.  Limited by some foul trouble throughout the game, she stayed aggressive using a variety of moves to get to the basket and profiting from the free-throw line where she was perfect on the day.

Stephanie Mavunga: 10 points, 11 rebounds, 1 assist, 2 steals (photo from www.goheels.com)

Hard work paid off for sure.  Stephanie was (as usual) active without the ball, posting and reposting, coming out to the perimeter on defense, whatever had to be done.  And that resulted in some great numbers for 26 minutes on the floor.  It represented the balance inside and out on offense for the Tar Heels.  Four of five starters were in double figures.  The fifth starter had 9 points.

Brittany Rountree: 9 points, 2 rebounds, 5 assists, 1 steal (photo from www.goheels.com)

Brittany started the scoring for UNC hitting a three-pointer right off the bat in UNC's first possession.  She made 3 of them in the game and with 5 assists was involved in at least 10 additional points for UNC.  I was glad as well to see her minutes increase.  She had 27 in this one and looks to be feeling better.

Latifah Coleman: 15 points, 2 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals (photo from www.goheels.com)

It was a really productive weekend for Latifah.  Always a monster on defense, I love how aggressive she has been offensively this season.  It had been she would break out only if one of the other players was limited somehow; but now she's got a great mix of getting buckets and getting buckets for others.

Allisha Gray: 20 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists, 1 steal (photo from www.goheels.com)

Leading scorer, Allisha Gray is a model of consistency and efficiency.  That 20 points is about her average and 5 of 9 from the field is pretty typical.  She makes it look easy; but I know it isn't.  But you can definitely see how the Coaching Staff started calling her Vegas  because she's money.  It's getting hard to find the words to describe her sometimes.

Danielle Butts: 7 points, 2 rebound, 1 steal (Associated Press photo)

She's a highlight reel.  Really!  I mean you look at the box score and see two field goals; but those of us who were there will tell you these were two of the most memorable field goals in the game.  A spin move to a jumper and a layup on a fast break that left us wondering how she even caught the basketball.

It was a great time in Myrtle Beach.  I could have used about a week down there.  I'm really glad we went to support the team after we (personally) missed the Oregon State game.  And they were grateful for the support.  They took a moment to wave to us and say "Thank you" at the end of both games.  Coach has already said next year is a go and they've secured one game with Mississippi State and just need one more.  I hope it's on a weekend.

The players and staff are on a well earned break.  On the 30th they'll be back in Chapel Hill for a afternoon game against Albany, a team UNC played in the 2013 NCAA tournament.

Until then and always...Go Heels!

Heels Take Down the Bears at the Beach

Well, here we are in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.  The UNC Women's Basketball team plays down here about every year.  I think I read we've had at least one game here in the last 21 seasons.  Scheduling has rarely allowed me to attend.  I think this is just my second time making it down here for their games.  This year, unlike some years past both games are on a weekend; so I gladly pushed the escape button.

This was a game of spurts for the Tar Heels.  That's how I would describe it on offense.  Thankfully the defense remained good throughout because there was this time frame in the first half on the offensive end, I think we'd all like to put behind us.  Still, final UNC Tar Heels 65, Maine Black Bears 36.

The children were excited when I said we were going to see the Tar Heels although my little one was a little confused when we kept driving and things didn't look familiar.  But then I told him the Tar Heels were at the beach.  Still not sure he believed me until we got inside.  This is our first road trip of this season.

I got us some food from the concession stand.  They had lots of choices.  I got a cheeseburger for my daughter, a hotdog for my son and a Chic Fil-a sandwich for myself.  We shared some fries (so good).  Eventually, it was time for the National Anthem and starting lineups.

Did I mention we had great seats.  Seating for this event was general admission and the tickets are very reasonable.  The game got started and it appeared to be a rout early on.  In the first few minutes we had 8 players score at least one basket.  I remember at the first official timeout, Maine hadn't scored yet.

It actually took them a few more minutes to score; but, then the Tar Heels went a bit cold.  It was 14 to 0 with 12 minutes to go in the first half; but over the time up to halftime, the Bears outscored the Tar Heels 18 to 10.  We applauded as our team went to the locker room as the Bears' fans in attendance gave their team a standing ovation.  They apparently had hope.  It had my competitive one looking a bit intense.

But in the 2nd Half

The 2nd half started out sort of like the first half ended and then we started to work a bit harder in the stands.  Several of us were yelling for more defense; but then Coach Johnson got us going in one cheer for defense.  Defense was the one constant in the game.  We needed some baskets.  Maine came down on one trip with a chance to tie the game; but the Heels got a stop.  Then it was like the lid came off the hoop.

The lead was 3, then it was 6, then it was 8 and it just kept climbing.  Maine scored another 18 points in the 2nd half.  The Tar Heels scored 41.  Overall still an atypical shooting night for the Heels (35% for the game); but, if you're going to have a tough shooting night, it's best to make sure the opponent has a tougher one.  Maine shot 28% for the game and had 26 turnovers.  UNC on the other hand had 11 turnovers.  Half of those turnovers Maine had were steals for North Carolina.

Stephanie Mavunga: 7 points, 5 rebounds, 1 block, 1 steal (photo from www.goheels.com)

Kind of a tough night for Stephanie.  She got some early baskets; but then Maine was focusing on defending her.  They were packed into this zone that made it difficult for us to get the ball to her.  Of course it wouldn't be a game we could document unless she got at least one block and she obliged us.

Xylina McDaniel: 9 points, 12 rebounds, 2 steals, 1 block (photo from www.goheels.com)

Xylina really had to make things happen out there last night.  That aforementioned zone had an effect on her too.  Maine had gotten wind of the success our All-ACC frontcourt.  She and Stephanie ended up at the free throw line quite a bit though.  They were a combined 8 of 10 from the charity stripe.

Latifah Coleman: 10 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals (photo from www.goheels.com)

Latifah filled the stat sheet in this one.  She got some hard buckets when North Carolina was struggling offensively, played great defense and didn't turn the ball over.

Brittany Rountree: 5 points, 2 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal (photo from www.goheels.com)

It was a quiet game for the senior; but she was reliable to do the little things that keeps UNC going. She even brought the ball up a few times against the defense and kept UNC's pace despite now wearing a knee brace for the 2nd straight game.

Allisha Gray: 17 points, 8 rebounds 3 assists, 1 steal (photo from www.goheels.com)

Gray scored 12 points in the 2nd half for North Carolina and hit both of her 3 pointers in the second half as well.  Against that packed in zone Maine was playing, it was tough to get into the paint; but she managed to penetrate it some.  Even her tough shots look good.

Danielle Butts: 4 points, 2 rebounds, 1 assist, 3 steals (photo from www.goheels.com)

Packing a lot of activity into a short period of time.  That's why I sometimes call her our power pack.  In 12 minutes, Danielle made her presence felt in the game doing everything asked of her.  She continues to be a source of offense and defense off the bench.  Most of all though, her endless energy is essential when starters are on the bench.

Jamie Cherry: 7 points, 1 assist, 1 steal

Learning more and more each game I'm glad she's getting the time now while Latifah is still with us.  Getting into that packed zone Maine had was tough but she managed to penetrate to the middle a few times, once going in for the lay-up and another passing out for a 3 point shot.

So, what to take away from this game?  It's nice down here though it's a really cloudy today.  I'm glad the games were both on a weekend so we could come down and support the team.  It's good they were able to shake off the initial frustration and dominate the game.  It was good to see the fight in them, especially Xylina and it was good to see their confidence rise over the 2nd half.  It's something to really build on as we wind down the out of conference games.  Hope to see that shooting percentage continue to rise back to normal.  Course it almost seemed unfair to give the Bears hope and then snatch it back like that.  Almost.

As for us, we are having a relaxing trip.   I got a buy one get one night free deal at a resort we have stayed in before.  It's close enough that it can be seen from the convention center.  I got to meet a couple of the other members of the online forum where we talk about the team.  They're a couple of great guys and I'm glad I got the chance to finally put faces with the screen names.  The children are enjoying the ocean and that is pretty much how we have spent this day until we went out to the ballpark to enjoy a Christmas light show.

Weekends are always too short; but, we're ready to cheer the Tar Heels on to another victory tomorrow afternoon.  Go Heels!

They Were Finally Home! Oh and They Won the Game

We  were super excited for the game yesterday.  It seemed like we had not been to Carmichael in ages.  Well for me it seemed like ages.  My daughter declared the team had been gone FOREVER!  You have to love 11 year-olds.  In truth it had been just short of a month.  The Oklahoma State game was on November 19th.  It was really good to be back in Carmichael.

Since then all they've done is win!  And they have done it in a variety of ways.  They have won when they were shooting well and when they weren't.  They have won when the other team has shot well.  They have won when they were (I hesitate to say it) beaten in the areas of fast break points and rebounding.  Yesterday's opponent was Appalachian State University.  UNC was a 31 point favorite.  Looks like someone got that one right.  Final, North Carolina 84, Appalachian State 52.

The children and I set out after a great time at church and after I parked in the lot on 54 as usual, we got down to Carmichael just after the opening tip.  Whew! Really looking forward to some 3:00 starts coming up on Sundays once the ACC season starts.  Since we were hurried, I was glad there were plenty of choices at the concession stand for lunch.

The game was pretty typical of the first game after final exams.  There were high points like seeing Stephanie Mavunga rule the paint and that fast break where Danielle Butts caught a pass in stride and made the lay-up without even putting the ball on the floor.  There were not so high points in the number of turnovers we had.

Atypical of any game was the scary moment when Allisha Gray after scoring on a great move to the basket through multiple defenders, came down awkwardly and stayed down.  Thankfully she got up before we all passed out from holding our breath.  She returned to the game a few minutes later.  Reading over www.espn.com today shows me we were fortunate.  A couple of other teams lost seniors to injuries over the weekend.  One of them (Minnesota's Banham) is done for the season with an Anterior Cruciate Ligament tear.  It's such a sad thing when that happens.

Back to the game, this was one where North Carolina could give its considerable depth a workout.  Every available player saw the floor and we were treated to some great stuff.  Hilary Summers and Hilary Fuller didn't score; but they combined for 8 rebounds in 14 combined minutes and that is big considering UNC's rebounding challenges lately.  As to the rest of the our bench, we'll start with the comeback kid.

Megan Buckland: 8 points, 1 rebound, 1 steal (photos from www.goheels.com)

I was so tickled with Megan's performance in this game.  She played 21 minutes and sank 2 of the 3 three-point shots she took.  She also moved really well on defense and drew two charges on Appalachian State.  She was getting her shot off faster and wow was it looking good.  It is so wonderful to see her gaining confidence.

N'dea Bryant: 9 points, 2 rebounds, 3 steals (photo from www.carolinatimes.com)

We got a taste, and I'm convinced it was just a taste of what N'dea Bryant is capable of in this game.  She's just an amazing athlete.  I remember pulling my phone out after one of the rebounds she got and tweeting, "can about jump out of the gym" and that is what that rebound inspired.  Between her wing span and vertical leap, she is really something to watch.  A few more of those pull-up jumpers fall and we're looking at a career high.  It was a season high for her though.

Danielle Butts: 6 points, 4 rebounds (associated press photo)

Our power pack was a pest on defense when she was in the game, just frustrating to deal with for the opposition.  Looking at the numbers you couldn't ask more from a player in 10 minutes of game time.  That aforementioned fast break was a thing of beauty.  It wasn't the easiest pass to catch and to get it into the basket and keep her body under control...I know it wasn't easy even though she made it look so.

Jessica Washington: 6 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists (photo from www.goheels.com)

Kind of a tough shooting night; but, otherwise a nice outing for Jessica.  I can see she is gaining confidence in how she moves around the court in the sets the team runs.  And the way she rebounds at her size is impressive.  Never been afraid to get in there and mix it up to crash the boards for this team.  Only one other player got more than 6 rebounds yesterday.

Jamie Cherry: 8 points, 2 rebounds, 3 assists, 4 steals (associated press photo)

Kind of a tough shooting night for Jamie as well, especially at the line; but, she stayed aggressive, especially on the defensive end of the court.  Overall I'm more than impressed with UNC's lone freshman.  First semester away from home is always tough and this team has been traveling a lot; but, she's been a contributor in every game.

Our starters put in the bulk of the minutes; but no one played over 25.  The only exception was Brittany.   She appeared to be dealing with maybe some soreness; but I honestly don't know anything other than I hope it's gone by Tuesday.  She has been having a really good year and was great at Rutgers.  She did start each half.  Her teammates had her back though.

Latifah Coleman: 9 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steal, 1 block (photo from www.goheels.com)

I'm loving what I'm seeing from Latifah (Coleman) this season.  She's more aggressive offensively, even more aggressive on defense (didn't think that was possible) and the intensity is that of a senior playing with a sense of urgency.  She even after driving to the basket and getting some contact, she gave our friends in the black and white shirts her opinion on the matter.  I'm not sure I have ever seen her do that.  I like it.

And not that anyone asked; but I can't say I particularly cared for how our friends in the black and white shirts impacted the game.  I know that as aggressive as UNC's defense plays there are going to be whistles.  Consistency is my concern.  Seemed they switched officials at half time even though I know they didn't.  We had 3 fouls the first half and 3 fouls in the first 2 minutes of the second.  Interesting stuff huh?  But I digress.

Allisha Gray: 12 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals (photo from www.goheels.com)

I think Allisha did everything except hit a 3 pointer in this game.  Such a multidimensional wonder she is on the court.  She was taking players off the dribble, dishing to teammates, crashing the boards and wreaking, havoc on defense.  After almost giving everyone a heart attack early on, she had a great afternoon.

Xylina McDaniel: 7 points, 3 rebounds, 4 steals (photo from www.goheels.com)

The numbers suggest a quiet game for Xylina; but, she was all over the court on defense when she was out there (hence the 4 steals).  Appalachian State was also double teaming her when she touched the ball; so things were kind of tough on the offensive end.  She mentioned in a recent feature that she is always confident her teammates have her back and her frontcourt partner was out there making things happen yesterday.

Stephanie Mavunga: 19 points, 9 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal, 3 blocks (photo from www.goheels.com)

What can I say about this young lady's performance.  She stuffed the entire stat sheet and used her size to dominate the game while she was in there.  The Appalachian State players did try to push her away from the basket; but she was really too much for them.  She shot 70% from the field and made all 5 of her free throws.  Also added 3 more blocks to her total.  She's on a record pace in that category with over 130 so far this season.  For some perspective, a fellow fan who previews each opponent for us, let us know that she came into this game with 50 more blocks than Appalachian State has as a team.

So takeaways from this game?  It was just good to see the team back in Carmichael again.  And it was good to get the first game after finals out of the way.  There is always of course a bit of a break and the first game afterwards tends to be up and down in nature.  But the free throw shooting for the team was improved.  They did,  as they should considering the size of each team, control the board and limited Appalachian State to 8 offensive rebounds; so they couldn't get many second chance points.  The intensity on defense resulted in 30 turnovers for the Mountaineers.  We also held them below 30% shooting in the 2nd half.

Have to build on that because Oregon State comes calling tomorrow night.  They are a top 20 team and will be the 5th team UNC plays that is ranked as of the date of the game.  It's already been mentioned UNC is the only team to take on and defeat four ranked teams this season and it would be great to get the win tomorrow night.  It would be a huge step towards getting through the Out of Conference portion of the season undefeated.

Go Heels!

Game 8: Tar Heels Fight Back at Rutgers

What a win North Carolina put together on Thursday.  So much went on this entry took a couple of extra days.  I was super excited about this matchup.  Two Hall of Fame Coaches, the two winningest active coaches in the game and though it wasn’t the first time the two of them had coached the same game; they were bringing their current teams together for the first time ever.  (photo from chapelboro.com)

These two are pioneers for the game and for women with teams that seemed to display their personalities.  I figured for a lot of reasons it would be a real battle.  I was right. Final: North Carolina 96, Rutgers 93 in Double Overtime.

But I was not right about how my afternoon would go.  I was unexpectedly out of the house during the actual game and had to follow the whole thing on Twitter as nothing else (BTN to go, ESPN live stats) was keeping up.  And that thing that lets you turn your DVR on with your phone?  Yeah, didn’t happen for me.  So I watched Twitter like a stalker.  I sent out a few tweets during the game because I was so impressed with the fight in the team.

At the end, I used Twitter to express my gratitude to whomever sends those live updates out.  I’m sure their fingers were shaking a lot of the time as mine were as I swiped at my phone’s screen almost continuously after each Tweet to get Twitter to refresh.  Had to stop myself several times remembering one team had just called a timeout.  Patience?  What is that?  When I was finally home I just wished I’d been able to witness it.

Careful What You Wish For

Well, I had some work to do at home and since I was out much later than I planned, the work went much later than I planned, all the way past 2am.  The TV was still on BTN (Big Ten Network) and at 2:00, what is this?  A replay?  DVR!  Wouldn’t you know?  Not working.  No wonder I wasn’t able to set it remotely.  I start silently lecturing myself.  “You cannot stay up and watch this.  Besides, you already know the outcome.  You should just turn that off and go to sleep.”  I tried (a little).  I turned down the volume.  I was up again at the end of that 11 point run the Heels went on in the beginning.  “You will regret this around 2:00 tomorrow afternoon when your body remembers just how little sleep you had.”  “I’ll just go to sleep with the TV on,” I said.  Lord forgive me I knew there was little chance of that when I came up with it.

Practical spoke again.  "Hello???  Did you forget this was a double overtime game?  Did you forget you have to get two children to school and yourself into the office in the morning?…wait, make that, in a few hours? “I’ll be okay right?  It is Friday.  I can sleep in the next day.”  Yeah, that’s right.  Spoken like I don’t live with a 4 year-old with an ever revving motor.  In my defense he is the kindest son a widow could have.  He waits patiently for me to wake up.

Then during a commercial that voice over guy comes on and says, “Due to time constraints, we will move ahead in the broadcast after this commercial break.”  Oh okay then, it won’t be as long as it was earlier.  Sad how I convinced myself to stay up and watch this.  Eventually I concluded this entry would be much better if I actually saw the game.  So I owed it to my craft to stay up right?  Yeah, I didn’t buy it either.

But wow is Rutgers good!  If they stay healthy they will continue to improve.  I have to think they are going to make a lot of noise their first year in the B1G.  I had read Coach Stringer “took the brakes off” and that concerned me for this game because in general other teams either can’t run with UNC or don't try.  Knowing who was on this team I felt that if Coach Stringer actually did let them try to run with UNC they could.  And watching the game confirmed that they did.  Rutgers’ team has some strong, quick, ultra-athletic shooters and a couple of big posts.  Sound familiar?  It should.

So here’s how it went down in some detail.  The truth is I talked a lot about the fight the team showed because they spent more time behind in this game than in front.  Thankfully that doesn’t count for the W.  North Carolina was out-rebounded for this game; but hopefully since they have finals, that won’t mean extra running this time.  And Rutgers had 29, count them 29 fast break points to North Carolina’s 12.  Not a typo.

In the eight games they’ve played North Carolina though has gotten victories in a variety of ways.   And that’s a good thing.  Yes, they did plenty of running; but, I also saw ball movement in the half-court sets last night that showed me our team has made considerable strides, especially passing against a zone defense.  They continue to rack up assists with 21 on 35 made baskets and though they were outrebounded, they continue to share those duties.  Only 2 players of the 10 that played, came away without a rebound in the game.    Everyone else had at least 2.  Some players had some big numbers; but this was very much a team effort.  But on big numbers, first the “Star Watch”.

At the start of the game, Debbie Antonelli let us know they’d be keeping an eye on the performances of two players. And they were as advertised.   Allisha (Gray) flirted with her career high.  She scored from a variety of spots on the court and sank two free throws that sent the game to the first overtime.

Allisha Gray: 29 points, 11 rebounds, 6 assists, 2 blocks (photo from www.goheels.com)

Gray lead the team in points, rebounds and assists.  It was what you’d call an All-American type of night *Cough (1st team).  What has always and continues to impress me is Gray’s efficiency.  She made 11 of her 15 shots from the field and 6 of her 10 free throws to put 29 points on the board.

Tyler Scaife: 25 points, 3 rebounds, 5 assists, 4 steals (photo from nj.com)

Scaife (also a sophomore) had a tough shooting night; but made a living off a sweet pull-up jumper after being called for two player control fouls.  Latifah Coleman and others did a good job on her I think; but she kept at it.  Those were the two players for Star Watch; but they had plenty of help from their teammates.

Betnijah Laney: 24 points, 24 rebounds, 4 assists, 4 steals (photo from nj.com)

For a lot of the game, the Tar Heels were helpless to stop Laney.  She had 14 of her points and 14 of her rebounds in the first half.  Just an incredible performance.  Now UNC did adjust. In watching the replay I noticed that at around the 4 minute mark of regulation she had 20 points and 21 rebounds and over the final 14 minutes she had 4 points and 3 rebounds.  She is going to cause a lot of trouble for teams this year.  Just going to be a big matchup problem for the opposition with the combination of her size and athleticism.

Stephanie Mavunga: 15 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, 6 blocks (photo from www.timesnewunion.com)

Stephanie was just a beast out there.  How she appears high above her defender in that photo was how she played most of the time she was on the court.  I read a Tweet that compared her footwork to Tim Duncan and there is that spin move and short bank shot she is great at that really does remind me of him.  He is also called “the Big Fundamental” and Stephanie impresses everyone with just how fundamentally sound she is when she is on the court.  Very deliberate, and highly disciplined on the offensive end and great timing most of the time on defense.  Our friends in the black and white shirts though God bless ‘em.  Okay I may be biased; but I thought a couple of calls against her, particularly the call that sent her to the bench for good, lacked a bit.  She put up those numbers in 26 minutes on the court.  Sitting was pretty much the only way to stop her.  Rutgers' post players also had foul trouble.  Hollivay and Evans had 4 a piece in limited minutes.

Xylina McDaniel: 14 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 block, 1 steal (Associated Press photo)

Xylina's minutes were not limited.  I was proud of her.  This was another game she had to play significant time without her front court partner.  And that is significant because as I mentioned in the early season feature on them, they are great together and last night I could see it. Of the 5 assists between them I think most of them were to each other.  One would draw the defense and the other would slip to the basket.  Xylina played 42 of the 50 minute game and shot 60% from the floor.  Two of our fast break points were on a lay-up she had where she beat everyone down the floor and Latifah Coleman awarded her with a sweet pass she caught in stride on her way to the hoop.

Syessence Davis: 15 points, 7 rebounds, 9 assists, 4 steals (photo from nj.com)

Something not mentioned during the broadcast or in anything I have read on the game: did anyone notice this young lady flirted with a triple double?  Did anyone notice she had 9 assists to 1 turnover?  She wasn't even a starter in this game.

Kaleah Cooper: 17 points, 4 rebounds, 1 steal (photo from www.nj.com)

Cooper was Rutgers' other starter in double figures.  She seemed to just take what the defense gave her.  She has athleticism and length and hit almost half her shots from the floor.

More on the Tar Heels

Yeah, I know, that was a lot on the other team; but, like I said in the Hawaii entry when the other team does well, it tells you a lot about your team in how they respond.  There are going to be nights where the other team can score with yours.  There are going to be nights where they make shots they don't normally make.  I think during that first overtime just as Tar Heel nation started to breathe, I heard Antonelli say at least three times that Rutgers was not a three-point shooting team.  They then proceeded to hit two long balls in their effort to send the game to another extra session.  On one of them it came from real deep. Our defender (Xylina McDaniel) was straddling the three point line contesting the shot.  Are you kidding me?  Thankfully we have shooters of our own.

Brittany Rountree: 12 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, 5 steals (Associated press photo)

Brittany did exactly what any of us would want.  She sank some 3-pointers to keep the defense honest.  She played great defense.  She rebounded from the guard position, did not turn the ball over, but forced 5 of Rutgers' turnovers and as she is often asked to do, she went to the line at the end of the game and hit 3 of 4 free-throws.  She was very active and with the exception of one play, completely under control.  Her shot is quicker this year and with the athleticism we will see in defenders this year, that is going to be an asset for her.  She's got a lot of range, but she was very deliberate in her movement during the game getting to her spot and being ready to launch.  And the timing of the ones she hit, wow.  I think all of them served to slow Rutgers' momentum.

Latifah Coleman: 8 points, 4 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 steals (Associated press photo)

After shooting 80% from long range out in Hawaii, Latifah’s long shot wasn’t falling last night; but she used her speed to attack the basket and penetrate Rutgers’ zone defense.  On one play she weaved her way through multiple defenders for a lay-up.  That got some emotion out of the senior.  I loved seeing that.  She pulled off a huge play in the 2nd overtime when she picked off a Rutgers pass and took it the distance for two points.  Then not long after she sank two big free throws to increase our lead.

The starters did a great job in the game.  They were 29 of 51 from the field.  Four of them were in double figures and the other was on the verge with 8 points.  But the bench came through with 18 points and these numbers may look small when you look at individual players; but the timing of their baskets was the key.  They hit some big shots and combined for 96 minutes, which is over 1/3 of the minutes in the game.

Why is this important?  Remember this team spent Thanksgiving week thousands of miles away in Hawaii.  They played 3 games in 3 days while they were there.  It’s a long plane ride back here from there.   I still remember the jet lag.  The team was back in Chapel Hill just two days before they had to leave for New Jersey.  I get tired just thinking about it.  Then there was over 7 minutes left in the game when Stephanie (Mavunga) went out with her 5th foul and North Carolina was facing a double digit deficit.  Let’s start with the power pack.

Danielle Butts: 7 points, 3 rebounds (Associated Press photo)

While dealing with foul trouble of her own, Danielle did what she had to do out there harassing Rutgers’ players, grabbing key rebounds and when each overtime started, she jumped center in place of Mavunga.  Yes, that’s right.  Do I need to say it?  Well I like saying it, so I will.  Crazy vertical leap.  In the first over time with North Carolina up 4 points, we had the ball on the baseline with a couple of ticks on the shot clock.  She wasn’t in the game before that play; but subbed in at that moment.  I remembered the Tweet “Alley Oop to Butts and is fouled”.  I sat up.  This was it.  Her reaction was just as I had pictured.  (photo from www.nj.com)

You have just got to love her.  This is a play North Carolina has run over the years.  On Thursday, Danielle rose up for the pass (from Gray) and pushed the ball into the basket in one motion.  Here's some perspective.  Danielle is 5'10" tall.  Previously this play was run with 6'7" Waltia Rolle and before that, 6'3" Jessica Breland.  When she went up for the pass, Danielle's waist was almost at the shoulders of her defender.  She made the free throw to push the lead to 7 points.

I know people remember that Rutgers came back to tie the game; but, I like to think, “Hey, what if we didn’t built that lead?”  And I thought she had another game winner for her career on a later play; but she was called for the charge.  Maybe should have pulled up for the jumper the way she did in that Miami game; but I’m sure she thought she had Davis beat and just wanted a better shot.

Jessica Washington: 3 points, 2 rebounds, 1 steal (photo from chapelboro.com)

Okay I know you might be thinking it was one basket.  But it was one huge basket when we were behind and time was not on our side in the ball game or on the shot clock.  Ball movement was stellar on the play and when Jessica spotted up in the corner she didn’t hesitate and sank a big one right in front of our bench.  And it was 13 minutes a starter got some rest.  3 points was after all the margin of victory.

Jamie Cherry: 3 points, 3 assists (Associated Press photo)

Parts of the night were kind of tough for Jamie.  She had some passes that got picked off after she’d penetrated the defense, drawn it towards her and tried to get the ball to an open player.  But there were three plays where it worked and she got her teammates good shots and Rutgers just adjusted.  I still just love what I see from her, how fearless she is in the big moments.  And the 3 pointer she hit, was also on a pivotal possession for us.  We were down seven points and she hit the shot in the flow of the offense to bring us back to within 4.  On our next possession Brittany Rountree hit one to bring us to within one.  Our shooters really came through in this one.

Every play was important in this one.  N’Dea Bryant and Hillary Summers combined to help fill the space inside.  Hilary hit a shot, grabbed 2 rebounds and had a block.  N’Dea grabbed a couple of boards and drew a foul on Rutgers and Megan Buckland drew a charge on Rutgers that took away a potential basket.

So was staying up to watch the replay worth it?  Especially in light of finding out today the replay is available online now?  Eh, I figured I could sleep later and I did.  And honestly, this wouldn’t be the nuttiest thing I’ve done in relation to UNC Women’s Basketball.  In 1995, I couldn’t afford plane tickets to the Regionals so a friend and I drove across country to Los Angeles in 2 days.  Ah to be young and crazy.  But most recently, when we were in Greensboro for the 2014 ACC tournament, a lot of people will remember we had a winter storm.  Arrived at the Coliseum on Semi-final Saturday to find the parking lot under 2 to 3 inches of ice water.   I pulled up to the front, carried (yes, carried) my then 10 year-old daughter getting her as close to the entrance as I could, parked my mini-van and proceeded to walk through the slush wearing my Saucony sneakers.  Of course the whole thing only happened because I had not purchased winter boots for my children and me that season.  It seems all I need to do for the triangle area to get snow is not buy winter boots.

My daughter’s shoes weren’t water proof; but she was far from soaked.  Any familiarity with Saucony sneakers though would let you know they kept about as much water off my feet as if I hadn’t been wearing anything; so I was grateful I had the foresight to pack extra socks and that I never leave home without my son’s stroller.  My daughter and I watched the games with our shoes off and our feet wrapped in our coats.  Looking around we were far from the only ones doing that.  So staying up until almost 4am was nothing right?  Yeah, I’m not buying it either.  It was more fun than pulling all-nighters at UNC.  And on that note, I wish the players and all of the students the best on their finals.

After that, is a game against Appalachian State on December 14th.  So excited to see the team again and give them the standing ovation I’ve been saving during that road trip.  And I’m ready for the end of, “Mom when are they coming back, it’s been forever!”

Go Heels!
